About the programme

The Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg, and Göteborgs Symfoniker (the National Orchestra of Sweden) have launched a unique twoyear Master's degree programme in orchestra studies. The students accepted to the programme make up an entirely new orchestra, The Swedish National Orchestra Academy (SNOA). The orchestra forms the foundation for this Master's degree programme for top-ranking students from all over Europe. SNOA is organizing the programme in collaboration with Göteborgs Symfoniker, the Göteborg Opera and the department of Opera at our Academy, in order to offer the basic repertoire of the professional orchestral musician.

Degree

Upon completion of this full-time two-year programme the student is awarded a Master’s degree.
A prerequisite for this Master’s degree is that the student holds a general or professional Bachelor´s degree when starting the programme.

Programme outline

SNOA offers musicians the unique combination of highly focused orchestral training, music coaching and a wealth of opportunities to perform in concert. The main focus areas are:
- Orchestral concert productions covering all periods from the Baroque, the Classical and Romantic periods through music of the late 20th century, and opera repertoire
- Repertoire training
- Interpretation
- Individual coaching

Performance series

SNOA performs nine subscription concerts annually. The concerts take place primary in the concert hall at the Academy of Music and Drama but there are also some performances in other concert halls.
In addition to preparing for these productions, the students play a full selection of orchestral repertoire with the orchestra and in sectional rehearsals, as well as receiving individual lessons.

In-depth studies

Knowledge of period styles is part of the curriculum along with music and orchestra history, theory, analysis and ergonomics for musicians, so the students get a well-rounded experience of both repertoire studies and personal development

The SNOA programme also offers opportunities for personal coaching in anticipation of orchestral job auditions. Audition master classes and workshops in performance psychology enable SNOA musicians to hone their skills and techniques so as to successfully negotiate the competitive audition process. Career development and leadership training are also included in the programme.

Subjects on schedule SNOA

Concert production
SNOA does nine public concerts each year. At least one of them is an opera with stage production

Individual instrument
As a SNOA-student you have 16 lessons/year to spend with a teacher of your own choice.

Mock audition
SNOA works in preparing auditioning in a series of six mock-auditions per academic year.

Repertoire class
Each period you have repertoire-classes either in section or tutti.

String section leader support
In this subject we practice on how to put bowings in orchestra-material, how to be a section leader, what´s the role of a concert master etc.

Intonation for Brass & Wood Wind
By playing chorales and orchestra-material this class improves how to work on intonation both in a theoretical and practical way.

Chamber music
The SNOA-students form groups, choose repertoire and teacher on their own. Everything is performed outside the school.

An important subject that is taught both in class and individually.

Examwork
In seminars and by tutoring SNOA enables you to complete your Master-degree examwork. The work is partly theoretical, partly practical.
