Master Programme in Music

(120 hec)

The master’s programme is a two-year programme in the second cycle (advanced level). It is intended for students who already have a BA degree or the equivalent of at least 180 higher education credits in music or another qualification from an academy of music.

The Master programme in music is offered with six specializations:
- composition
- improvisation
- interpretation
- organ and related keyboard instruments
- symphonic orchestra performance (SNOA)
- theory

In interpretation and improvisation you can make a free choice of musical genre, style or instrument: classical music, free performance, jazz, folk music or world music.
Composition is also a comprehensive area now including electronic music and sound art.
Music theory aims at different musical practises, whereas symphonic orchestra is focussing professional orchestras in Western music.
Organ and related keyboard instruments focuses on solo and ensemble repertoire as well as improvisation and is being launched together with the Göteborg Organ Art Center (GOArt).
The content is to a high degree directed by your own focus and perspective. The six orientations have no clear cut limitations regarding genre or creative methods.

The programme is given in English. Students who have obtained the Master’s degree are eligible to apply for the Ph.D. programme in music performance or composition.

All information below applies to the specializations composition, improvisation, interpretation and theory.

Aim
The programme is intended to provide advanced knowledge and skills in the specialization chosen. You will enhance your skills in your major subject but also acquire more extensive knowledge to support your professional musical practice through the study of interesting texts, in seminars and in an independent project.

Contents
The contents of the programme are governed to a great extent by the focus and perspective you choose yourself. The artistic questions you raise will characterize the different courses and the individualized teaching will be adapted to your own development.
Musical performances, for instance in the form of concerts, will be integrated with the independent project you write.
You will be able to learn about research methodologies and will extend your practical knowledge about music. This will enable you to undertake projects involving musical performances with greater experience and with added insights into different practical and theoretical methods.

Courses
This is a two year fulltime programme. You will be provided with one teacher for your major subject and one tutor. All students will at the same time be offered scope for joint discussions based on the different performance projects.
