Residence permit
If you are a citizen of a country other than the Nordic and EU/EEA countries and intend to study in Sweden, you must apply for a permit for visiting students before arriving. Permits are issued by the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket) and must be granted before you come to Sweden. Visa and residence permits can be applied for at the Swedish Embassy/Consulate in your home country.
To be sure of obtaining your permit in time, you should give in your application 6-8 weeks before your departure to Sweden.
When you apply, you should present a valid passport, the letter of admission you have got from the Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg, and papers certifying that you have some form of financial security (i.e. scholarships, private guarantees etc).
You must be able to show that you have enough means at your disposal for your upkeep throughout the study period, equivalent to SEK 6.300/month (or a reduced sum if you can show that you will be receiving free board and/or lodging).
When applying for a residence permit you will be requested to pay a fee of SEK 1.000.
You may work during the period that you have a residence permit for studies. You do not need a special work permit. If you have applied for an extension of your residence permit, you may continue to work while waiting for the answer, if you made your application while your earlier permit was valid and you have had a residence permit for studies for at least six months.
Students from non-Nordic EU/EEA countries are exempted from the above procedure, but they must apply for a residence permit within three months of their arrival in Sweden, at the Swedish Migration Board. There you will fill in a form and provide documents showing that you are admitted to the Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg, and that you are covered by the social security system in your home country. Bring passport or identity card.
Students from the Nordic countries don’t need to register with the Swedish Migration Board.
